All of santa's reindeer are most probably female. Males shed their antlers long before Christmas.


According to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, reindeer grow their antlers in the summer.

Male reindeer drop their antlers at the beginning of winter. Females retain theirs until after they give birth in the spring.

But it is possible that they are steers (castrated males), most often used to pull sleds in winter because the bulls are usually tired out after rutting season.

Santa's reindeer are of the uncommon subspecies, saintnicolas magicalus that have other unusual characteristics, such as the ability to fly, so it is not guaranteed that male reindeer of this subspecies would drop their antlers on the same schedule as other reindeer.
