IKEA prints 200 million copies of its catalog in 31 languages. More than any other book or magazine.


2012 marks the 61st anniversary of the first IKEA catalog. The catalog is available in 59 printed editions, in 31 languages and in 39 countries.

The total number of copies in print places the IKEA catalog in third place after the Holy Bible and Harry Potter.

This year IKEA is also introducing new digital tools, including Android and iPad application and a new design-focused Twitter handle, @DesignByIKEA.

In 2009, after 50 years of using a custom version of the Futura font, Ikea shocked typographers by switching to the ubiquitous Verdana typeface.

IKEA’s Ivana Hrdlickova said the main reason for the switch was to allow the company to use the same typeface in all countries (current IKEA typefaces do not contain Asian characters, for example). Being that Verdana was designed for the web, it also allows the company’s image to remain consistent online and in print.
