Officials are calling a software glitch that rendered millions of German ATM cards useless a year 2010 problem.

ATM machines were either rejecting, or swallowing, valid debit and credit cards, wrongly presuming them to have expired.

German banks scrambled to update their ATMs as credit card holders fumed.
