Up to 80,000 tons of meteorites hit the earth each year.


Most of this mass would come from dust-sized particles.

It is possible to estimate the number of meteorites per year by carefully monitoring the meteorites per day in one area and extrapolating to the area of the surface of the earth.

Additional evidence comes from measuring the number of meteorites found in dry regions where there isn't much vegtation or erosion.
