An analysis by Imperva of 32 million passwords obtained from the RockYou.com server breach, showed the insecure practices used by millions of users when choosing their passwords.
The study found many short passwords, lacking a mix of lower case, capitals, and numeric characters and the use of trivial dictionary words and common names, which are especially susceptible to brute force password recovery applications that can find matches in seconds.
Breaking into a site by guessing just the most popular passwords would be successful in one of 110 tries. A hacker running easily obtained software on a DSL connection would typically gain access to one new account per second, 3,600 accounts per hour.
