Innocents Day, Dec 28, was considered the unluckiest day of the year. No work should be begun today.


In the Calendar of Superstitions, Childermas, or Innocents Day was considered the unluckiest day of the year. It was particularly unlucky to marry, but beginning any new work was discouraged.

Childermas comemmorates the child victims in Bethlehem, put to death on the orders of King Herod of Judea according to the Gospel of Matthew 2:16-18.

Gregory, in his Treatise on the Boy Bishop, reports that children were beaten on Childermas Day, so that they would better remember the lessons of the murder of the innocents.
