3,500 people were bitten by vampire bats in Condorcanqui, Peru. 20 died.


Fernando Borjas, a medical doctor in the regional capital Chachapoyas, reported that 3,500 people in Awajun and Wampis communities of Condorcanqui were bitten.

An outbreak of rabies in the bats is responsible for the deaths of 20 people.

5 children, aged 5 to 10, died after being bitten by rabid bats.

Health authorities send teams with vaccines to the remote jungle villages, but after a 15-hour river trip they often arrive too late.
