Studies of traditional societies have shown that following repeated exposure to generalised cold, an individual will allow his or her skin temperature to drop without triggering normal levels of discomfort or shivering.

Changes in physiological response to cold can occur after relatively short term repeated cold exposure and was noted on a seasonal basis in a study of Quebec postal workers.
