The word algebra comes from the arabic al-jebr, the setting of broken bones, as equations are solved by the reunion of broken parts.


The word first occurred in the phrase al-jebr w'al muqâbalah, the title of a book by Mohammed ibn Mûsâ al-Khowârizmî around 825.
