Individuals responded as soon as they reached a solution and provided a rating of subjective insight.

Insight was represented by distinct patterns of neural activity intrinsic to the problem itself and not to one's own assessment of insight.

The pattern preceded the subjective awareness of insight by up to 8 seconds.
